Sourcing and showcasing local and seasonal produce are the primary focus of the Kitchen team at the Allanton Inn. The Borders is rich in a wide variety of produce from local land and waters, and we are proud of our connections with local farmers where quality is allied to best farming practices.
Meats
Local farmer, butcher & friend, Adam, supplies our pork products from Reivers Foods. We source local Whiteadder Lamb that are reared in the fields around Allanton & game when in season, from local farmers and game charcuterie from Andersen & Sondergaard. Other meats come from Scottish suppliers such as Campbells Prime Meats near Edinburgh.
Larder
Our friendly local farmer David delivers us free range eggs, freshly laid from his chickens two miles away at Edington Mains (Jim Clarks former home). Most of the year our tomatoes are from Standhill Tomatoes (Scotland’s only tomato producing commercial glasshouse which is based alongside their dairy farm where the slurry feeds the biodigester which heats the greenhouse) and we are old friends and fans of the honey from the Robson family at the Chain Bridge Honey Farm. We have a carefully selected choice of Northumbrian and Scottish Cheeses too and our daily fresh bread from Fords the Bakers of Norham (Katrina’s home village where her home farm looks onto the bakery).
Fish
The fresh fish we use is caught or landed locally at Eyemouth and delivered daily by our chatty fishmonger, Ross Dougal’s team and the Lobster we serve are straight from the Hazelann boat which catch lobster of the Berwickshire Coast, near St Abbs. We regularly source Lindisfarne Oysters or these can be bespokely ordered (48 hours needed) from the Ross family farm on the Northumberland coast.
Desserts
Our desserts are all home-made although we do source the best & award-winning ice cream from Giacopazzi’s in Eyemouth. Honeyberries grown at Lintlaw farm, five miles away, are regular features on the dessert menu and sometimes feature as jam at breakfast time.
Breakfast
This is when the local produce really shines, and the breakfast menu has an excellent selection of what the area has to offer. We offer fruit compotes such as rhubarb, apples, plums, pears & brambles which are all harvested locally (mostly in the village) then preserved.
Guests can enjoy some unique Borders delicacies, such as Selkirk Bannock (plus other Fords the Bakers bread), local oats & honey. Our Homemade Granola & Porridge uses locally grown oats sourced as ground oatmeal & flakes from Heatherslaw Mill. We also offer locally smoked kippers, Chainbridge honey, hot smoked salmon, Reivers sausages, Reivers bacon, Standhill Tomatoes, Edington Mains eggs, homemade jams & marmalades, the list goes on. The Allanton Inn strives to ensure that guests leave with a wonderful lasting memory and taste of what the Borders is and has to offer.
Interesting and alternative menus
We believe that the quality of our produce and the skills in the kitchen provide the basis for interesting menus, often offering that something a little bit different; we are confident that the Allanton Inn gives a refreshing change for dining and showcasing good food in the Borders.
Our menus are small (usually 5 starters, 8 mains & 4 desserts plus cheese) and change regularly but as all our dishes are freshly made on the premises, we can accommodate any dietary requirements or requests – we will endeavour to meet every need of our guests.
On Sundays, we always have Roast Beef on the menu served with all the trimmings.
The bar leads into two dining areas and out to the beer garden. One of the dining areas is available for private dining accommodating up to 16 people; personalised menus can be arranged. This is a perfect venue for shoot dinners, celebrations, and family gatherings.
In the summer months particularly, we love being able to showcase the fabulous Scottish seafood by offering our popular seafood platters. With advance booking, you can be guaranteed to enjoy this wonderful dish all year round.
Our Pizza Shack is open in the beer garden May -September.
Relaxing family-friendly atmosphere
Children are always welcome here, and in addition to our children’s menu, dishes from the main menu are available in smaller portions. On warmer days dining in the enclosed beer garden is a treat and if we get some summer sun. You can use this great space just to soak up the sun, rolling countryside and unwind.
